G.A. Tokaty: A History and Philosophy of Fluid Mechanics

A History and Philosophy of Fluid Mechanics

Description

Through the centuries, the intricacies of fluid mechanics -- the study of the laws of motion and fluids in motion -- have occupied many of history's greatest minds. In this pioneering account, a distinguished aeronautical scientist presents a history of fluid mechanics focusing on the achievements of the pioneering scientists and thinkers whose inspirations and experiments lay behind the evolution of such disparate devices as irrigation lifts, ocean liners, windmills, fireworks and spacecraft. The author first presents the basics of fluid mechanics, then explores the advances made through the work of such gifted thinkers as Plato, Aristotle, da Vinci, Galileo, Pascal, Newton, Bernoulli, Euler, Lagrange, Ernst Mach and other scientists of the 20th century. Especially important for its illuminating comparison of the development of fluid mechanics in the former Soviet Union with that in the West, the book concludes with studies of transsonic compressibility and aerodynamics, supersonic fluid mechanics, hypersonic gas dynamics and the universal matter-energy continuity. Professor G. A. Tokaty has headed the prestigious Aeronautical Research Laboratory at the Zhukovsky Academy of Aeronautics in Moscow, and has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is Emeritus Professor of Aeronautics and Space Technology, The City University, London.

Joseph Conrad: The Children of the Sea : A Tale of the Forecastle

The Children of the Sea : A Tale of the Forecastle

Description

The Children of the Sea is the first US release of Joseph Conrad's novella The Nigger of the 'Narcissus': A Tale of the Sea. The Nigger of the 'Narcissus': A Tale of the Sea (1897) is a novella by Joseph Conrad. Because of its quality compared to earlier works, some have described it as marking the start of Conrad's major (middle) period; others have placed it as the best work of his early (first) period. John G. Peters said of it in 2006: "The unfortunately titled The Nigger of the "Narcissus" (titled Children of the Sea in the first American edition) is Conrad's best work of his early period. In fact, were it not for the book's title, it undoubtedly would be read more often than it is currently. At one time, it was one of Conrad's most frequently read books. In part because of its brevity, in part because of its adventure qualities, and in part because of its literary qualities, the novel used to attract a good deal of attention." The author's preface to the novel, regarded as a manifesto of literary impressionism, is considered one of Conrad's significant pieces of non-fiction writing. The titular character, James Wait, is a West Indian black sailor on board the merchant ship Narcissus sailing from Bombay to London. Wait falls ill with tuberculosis during the voyage, and his plight arouses the humanitarian sympathies of many of the crew, five of whom rescue him from his deck cabin during a storm, placing their own lives and the ship at risk. Captain Alistoun and the old sailor Singleton, on the other hand, remain concerned primarily with their duties as sailors and are indifferent to Wait's condition. The novel is seen as an allegory about isolation and solidarity, the ship's company serving as a microcosm of a social group. Conrad appears to suggest that humanitarian sympathies are, at their core, feelings of self-interest and that a heightened sensitivity to suffering can be detrimental to managing a society. In the United States, the novel was first published with the title The Children of the Sea: A Tale of the Forecastle, at the insistence by the publisher, Dodd, Mead and Company, that no one would buy or read a book with the word Nigger in its title. In 2009, in an effort 'to remove this offence to modern sensibilities', WordBridge Publishing reissued the book under the title The N-word of the Narcissus.

Let's Talk About Where Babies Come from: A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families

Description

An updated 15th anniversary edition of the classic guide for young children on babies, bodies, love, sex, reproduction and families. This clear, lively information book about sex and reproduction covers all the main areas: babies, reproduction, bodies, chromosomes, genes, growing up, love, health and lots more. As before, the information is imparted simply and reassuringly with humorous commentary from an inquisitive bird and a squeamish bee and very friendly full-colour cartoon-strip illustrations. Created by the author and illustrator of Let's Talk About Sex, this forthright and funny book has been newly updated for its fifteenth anniversary.

The last thing Melanie expected to lose when she went on a diet was her husband. In our post-Christian context, public life has become markedly more secular and private life infinitely more diverse. Yet many Christians still rely on cookie-cutter approaches to evangelism and apologetics. Most of these methods assume that people are open, interested and needy for spiritual insight when increasingly most people are not. Our urgent need, then, is the capacity to persuade to make a convincing case for the gospel to people who are not interested in it. In his magnum opus, Os Guinness offers a comprehensive presentation of the art and power of creative persuasion. Christians have often relied on proclaiming and preaching, protesting and picketing. But we are strikingly weak in persuasion the ability to talk to people who are closed to what we are saying. Actual persuasion requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. Guinness notes, "Jesus never spoke to two people the same way, and neither should we." Following the tradition of Erasmus, Pascal, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Malcolm Muggeridge and Peter Berger, Guinness demonstrates how apologetic persuasion requires both the rational and the imaginative. Persuasion is subversive, turning the tables on listeners' assumptions to surprise them with signals of transcendence and the credibility of the Let's Talk About Where Babies Come from: A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families download PDF gospel. This book is the fruit of forty years of thinking, honed in countless talks and discussions at many of the leading universities and intellectual centers of the world. Discover afresh the persuasive power of Christian witness from one of the leading apologists and thinkers of our era."

Tony Park: Far Horizon

Far Horizon

Description

A bloody and tragic run-in with ivory hunters in Mozambique left Mike Williams, former Australian Army officer, in despair. A year on, the authorities are on the poachers' trail and need his help to catch them. Now, as an overland tour guide, he must choose between his duty to keep the young tourists in his care safe, and his hunger for retribution. Thrown into the mix is tenacious English journalist Sarah Thatcher, who is determined to cover the story. She'll risk anything and anyone for a scoop, but little does she realize the danger that lies ahead. The murderous hunters and the innocent travellers are on a parallel journey through Africa's most spectacular locations. Eventually their paths will cross and Mike will have his shot at revenge. But at what cost?

This monograph presents 39 complex structures by the Princeton University professor and structural engineer Guy Nordenson. The body of Far Horizon free epub work, developed with architects and artists including Raimund Abraham, Henry N. Cobb, Steven Holl, Michael Maltzan, Richard Meier, SANAA, and many others, reveals Nordenson's unique contributions to a progressive collaborative design process as both engineer and designer. The structures in this volume span twenty-eight years, from his early work with Paul Weidlinger, to his formation of the New York office of Ove Arup & Partners, through the first 13 years since the 1998 establishment of his current independent practice, Guy Nordenson and Associates. Distinguishing four sources of power in human societies - ideological, economic, military and political - The Sources of Social Power traces their interrelations throughout human history. In this first volume, Michael Mann examines interrelations between these elements from neolithic times, through ancient Near Eastern civilizations, the classical Mediterranean age and medieval Europe, up to just before the Industrial Revolution in England. It offers explanations of the emergence of the state and social stratification; of city-states, militaristic empires and the persistent interaction between them; of the world salvation religions; and of the particular dynamism of medieval and early modern Europe. It ends by generalizing about the nature of overall social development, the varying forms of social cohesion and the role of classes and class struggle in history. First published in 1986, this new edition of Volume 1 includes a new preface by the author examining the impact and legacy of the work.

All is Well: Heal Your Body with Medicine, Affirmations, and Intuition

Description

'Whenever there is a problem, repeat over and over: All is well. Everything is working out for my highest good. Out of this situation only good will come. I am safe.' In this healing tour de force, best-selling authors Louise L. hay and Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz have teamed up for an exciting re-examination of the quintessential teachings from Heal Your Body. All Is Well brings together Louise's proven affirmation system with Mona Lisa's knowledge of both medical science and the body's intuition to create an easy-to-follow guide for health and well-being. And, for the first time ever, they present scientific evidence showing the undeniable link between the mind and body that makes these healing methods work. Bringing focus and clarity to the effects of emotions on the body, All Is Well separates the body into seven distinct groups or organs-or emotional centers-that are connected by their relationship to certain emotions. Structured around these emotional centers, the authors outline common imbalances and probably mental causes for physical illness. They also include case studies that show a complete program for healing that draws from all disciplines, including both traditional and alternative medicine, affirmations, nutritional changes, and so much more. Using the self-assessment quiz, the holistic health advice, and an expanded version of Louise's original affirmation chart, you can learn how to heal your mind and body with affirmations and intuition and live a balanced, healthy life. 'All Is Well is simply excellent. Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz has blended her expertise in health with the healing wisdom of Louise Hay, one of the leading icons of the human consciousness community. This book is a tribute to the intuitive genius of Louise, whose work as a role model for positive thinking pioneered healing first for people with AIDS and then four countless others.' Caroline Myss, New York Times best-selling author of Archetypes: Who Are You?

Description

The Phelans have owned Mossgrove for generations. The small, rural Irish farm has been the pride of them all until Ned's wife, Martha, arrives and begins to undermine generations of hard work and happiness. She resents the deep history of the place and sets about making it her own, shutting out what is left of Ned's family. She is particularly jealous of Ned's sister, Kate, a local nurse and doting aunt to Martha's children. When Ned dies suddenly, Martha puts Mossgrove up for sale in hopes that it will be bought by the neighbouring Conways, who have long coveted the Phelan farm. What she does not realize are the lengths to which Kate and the hired hand Jack will go to keep the land in the family ...

The Film That Changed My Life: 30 Directors on Their Epiphanies in the Dark

Description

The movie that inspired filmmakers to direct is like the atomic bomb that went off before their eyes. "The Film That Changed My Life" captures that epiphany. It explores 30 directors love of a film they saw at a particularly formative moment, how it influenced their own works, and how it made them think differently."Rebel Without a Cause" inspired John Woo to comb his hair and talk like James Dean. For Richard Linklater, something was simmering in me, but "Raging Bull" brought it to a boil. "Apocalypse Now" inspired Danny Boyle to make larger-than-life films. A single line from "The Wizard of Oz"-- Who could ever have thought a good little girl like you could destroy all my beautiful wickedness? --had a direct impact on John Waters. That line inspired my life, Waters says. I sometimes say it to myself before I go to sleep, like a prayer. In this volume, directors as diverse as John Woo, Peter Bogdanovich, Michel Gondry, and Kevin Smith examine classic movies that inspired them to tell stories. Here are 30 inspired and inspiring discussions of classic films that shaped the careers of today s directors and, in turn, cinema history."

Linda Howard: Prey

Prey

Description

In this captivating novel of romantic suspense, "New York Times" bestselling author Linda Howard brings us deep into the wild, where a smart and sexy outdoor guide and her ruggedly handsome competitor must join forces to survive--and avoid becoming what they never expected to be: PREY Thirty-two-year-old Angie Powell has always spoken her mind, but in the presence of Dare Callahan she nurses a simmering rage. After all, why give Dare the satisfaction of knowing he can push her buttons "and" push her to the edge? Three years ago, Dare returned home to rural western Montana and opened a hunting business to rival Angie's. Complicating matters is the fact that Dare has asked Angie out (not once but twice) and has given her a gift of butterflies in the process. Angie has no patience for butterflies. They only lead to foolish decisions. And now the infuriatingly handsome Iraq war vet has siphoned away Angie's livelihood, forcing her to close up shop. Before Angie is to leave town, she organizes one last trip into the wilderness with a client and his guest, who wants to bag a black bear. But the adrenaline-fueled adventure turns deadly when Angie witnesses a cold-blooded murder and finds herself on the wrong side of a loaded gun. Before the killer can tie up this attractive loose end, a bear comes crashing through the woods--changing the dark game completely. Luckily, Dare is camping nearby and hears the shots. Forced together for their very survival, Angie and Dare must confront hard feelings, a blinding storm, and a growing attraction--while being stalked by a desperate killer and a ferocious five-hundred-pound beast. And neither will stop until they reach their prey.

"The Accidental Princess" by Michelle Willingham Destined for greatness . . .Four Clans of wild cats have shared the forest for generations, thriving in their territories. But tensions are running high, and ThunderClan must assert its strength or risk falling prey to its power-hungry neighbors. Into this time of uncertainty, a kit is born. A prophecy Prey free pdf foretells that Bluekit will be as strong as fire, destined to blaze through the ranks of her Clan. But with this prophecy comes the foreshadowing of her destruction by the one enemy she cannot outrun. As Bluekit gains power and eventually earns her leader name, Bluestar, she fights to protect her Clan. But secrets from the past threaten to surface secrets that may destroy ThunderClan . . . and Bluestar." Rafe Khatchadorian, the hero of the bestselling Middle School series, is ready for a fun summer at camp--until he finds out it's a summer `school` camp! Luckily, Rafe easily makes friends with his troublemaking cabin mates and bunkmate, a boy nicknamed Booger-Eater, who puts up with endless teasing from the other kids. Rafe soon realizes there's more to a person than a nickname, though, and Booger-Eater might be the kind of friend you want on your side when the boys from the Cool Cabin attack.

William Shakespeare,John Pitcher: "The Winter's Tale"

Description

One of Shakespeare's later plays, best described as a tragi-comedy, the play falls into two distinct parts. In the first Leontes is thrown into a jealous rage by his suspicions of his wife Hermione and his best-friend, and imprisons her and orders that her new born daughter be left to perish. The second half is a pastoral comedy with the "lost" daughter Perdita having been rescued by shepherds and now in love with a young prince. The play ends with former lovers and friends reunited after the apparently miraculous resurrection of Hermione. John Pitcher's lively introduction and commentary explores the extraordinary merging of theatrical forms in the play and its success in performance. As the recent Sam Mendes production at the Old Vic shows, this is a play that can work a kind of magic in the theatre.
